Teaching philosophy

  • Music-making for everyone
  • Learn at your own pace
  • Develop your musical judgment

Vanessa believes that everyone has the potential and ability to make music. Not just kids, but adults too can begin their musical journey – it is never too late!

To make good music, a strong foundation is needed and proper habits need to be established right from the start. Thus, there will be a focus on the basics (posture, rhythm, note-reading, sound production etc.) during earlier stages of lessons which will enable students to achieve higher standards of playing through technical ease and freedom of expression. Students should be patient with their progress, especially beginners or transfer students who require technique adjustments.

Vanessa also takes pride in engaging and challenging her students so that they can think critically and learn better. Students are also encouraged to ask questions when in doubt. This makes lessons more interesting and helps students to understand and remember concepts more easily, build confidence in performing, and express their ideas.

Students will develop their own judgment to make musical decisions based on the context of the piece and express their musical ideas accordingly. Students will also be encouraged to explore the different ways to play every note and shape each phrase before deciding how they want to play, making them more independent, creative, and versatile players. Do expect detailed lessons that focus on different aspects of music such as phrasing, articulation, dynamics, colour, harmony etc. which will help students play with more musicality.

At any level, students will be encouraged to perform whenever opportunities are available. These include student recitals, festivals, competitions, etc. to gain exposure and confidence which will serve as valuable learning experiences. From these, students can learn from others and continue to improve their playing standards.

As every student is different, lessons will be customised to suit each individual’s learning style. Contact Vanessa to discuss more about your musical aims/goals – whether you are an aspiring musician, hoping to take graded exams, learning for leisure, or wanting to learn a particular piece etc., and she will work with you towards achieving them.

In a nutshell, music-making requires patience, discipline, determination, and passion. It is a lifelong journey but an extremely rewarding and satisfying one. The best thing is that everyone can learn how to make music that touches the hearts of others.
